We will have at least four performance tasks (projects) due in science this year.
1st Quarter Performance Task

Detailed Rubric and task sheets for the sea turtle project:

Our first inquiry in science will be a sea turtle research project also known as a performance task. This will be our 1st Quarter Performance Task.

The actual product will be an oral report, visual aid, and a portfolio on a sea turtle of the student's choice to help students learn how to research and present information. We will do several performance tasks this year, so we will walk through this project together to learn about research strategies in an effort for students to work independently and with confidence on future projects. It will be conducted in class to learn proper research methods and organizational skills as well as information on conservation of sea turtles.

The project will be for a grade and has multiple components which will take multiple class periods to complete. Traditional assessesments will also be taken related to the content learned on sea turtles and will relate to the notes taken in class as well as class readings and discussions on the sea turtle unit. Students will present their research to the class as part of the project and performance grade.

If the student has access to the internet and wishes to also do research at home, that is of course acceptable but it is not required to successfully complete the project. Students are expected to work diligently in class and complete the assignments during the time given in order to complete the task successfully as there are multiple steps to the research process and completion of these steps are a part of the grade in addition to the final product and presentation. The process is as important as the product for this assignment.

We will follow the general directions on Mrs. Fetzer's Turtle Webquest: http://zunal.com/webquest.php?w=17997; however we will not follow the grading rubric on the website since we are completing this project in class. The task will be graded as follows:

Name/Title (2pts)
Table of Contents (2pts)
Log of online sites utilized (2pts)
Sea Turtle Anatomy Sheet (2pts)
Sea Turtle Profile Sheet (2pts)
Sea Turtle Quiz - completed (2pts)
Visual Aid (2pts)

Once you feel you know enough about sea turtles, take the quiz below to find out how much you remember. You may take the quiz as often as you qish to master the content. Your goal is to make above a 70% on the quiz.
